WHAT TO DO WHEN YOUR BRAIN THINKS EVERY STICK IS A SNAKE

Did you know your brain has a negativity bias? And that it’s evolutionarily advantageous to notice what could cause you harm or kill you? Yeah– that’s a good thing! It helps our species survive for millennia.  But since there are less tigers on the prowl, and we don’t live our on the grassy plains, we could stand to settle down a bit and not be on watch for danger all the time.

Say you’re out for a walk in the woods and you see a thin, long, dark shaped thing on the ground in front of you, your tiny alarm bell in the brain (your amygdala) thinks “SNAKE!” causing you to JUMP and suck in your breath, your heart will be beating super fast & strong and you will be breathing fast and shallow because you think you are in danger— even if it really is a stick! Thanks amygdala, you think sarcastically.  “You’re welcome” it says, followed sassily by, “You’d really thank me for real if that WAS a real snake!”

But usually it’s not. Usually it’s bad traffic, emails you forgot to read or send, bills that you need to pay (dang it, is the light bill due today?!) All kinds of things get your brain in alarm mode and you suffer the excess of adrenaline and cortisol into your bloodstream, making you feel like crap. No bueno!

That’ what happens every single day when you’re pummeled with stress– your brains goes into emergency mode- even though there really aren’t snakes out there.

Stress– you cannot get away form it. But you can learn how to live better with it, manage it, reduce it. Let me show you how.
